The Olympic Javelin

Hitachi of Japan has been contracted to build 29 six-car train sets for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) domestic services in the UK. The Class 395 'Olympic Javelin' trains will be used to carry people to the 2012 London Olympics, but they have been principally ordered to provide a commuter service between Kent and London. Details are given of the bogie design, use of vehicle dynamics simulation in the design process and anti-rolling contact fatigue measures. The train is to be ready for future European Rail Traffic Management System implementation and will be equipped with three signalling systems: TPWS/AWS for electrified Network Rail routes, TVM430 for the CTRL high speed line, and the KVB system at St Pancras. The approvals process that Hitachi must go through is discussed. This includes assessment of trains against Technical Standards for Interoperability by a Notified Body, the requirement for Route Acceptance Safety Cases and a review by HM Railway Inspectorate and demonstration of a robust safety management system by the train operating company.
